Aquarium – Herpetarium of Edessa
Edessa Herpetarium and Aquarium: The Palace of Nature in the City of Waters
At the point where Edessa reveals its most vivid face – between the famous waterfalls and the historic Varossi district – a special cultural corner emerges: the Herpetarium and Aquarium of Edessa. A special centre of life, knowledge and admiration for the wildlife that inhabits the waters and lands of the region.
Housed in a renovated stone building of the old industrial zone of the Neromills – specifically in the Neromillos Giannakis – the Herpetarium is one of the most unusual but also impressive points of interest in Edessa. The effort started thanks to the vision of the biologist Anastasios Boschos, who dedicated his life to the promotion of the fish and herpetofauna of the area.
Today, thanks to the love and care of the manager Dimitris Dourvanis, the Herpetarium has evolved into a small paradise: 58 snakes of 41 species, including an impressive green anaconda 3.5 meters long. Along with them, turtles, lizards, iguanas and a multitude of amphibians, all housed in specially designed areas, safe for the public and animal-friendly.
In the same building operates the Aquarium with freshwater fish, endemic species from rivers, lakes and streams of the wider region. There, visitors can see newts, crayfish, crabs, crabs and many other aquatic organisms living in the waters of Pella. Special 3,000-litre facilities and smaller aquariums are home to impressive species, with the aim not only to exhibit but also to protect them.
The scientific laboratory that operates within the site – equipped with microscopes, thermal chambers, incubators and a recovery room – offers the right conditions for research and education.
The ultimate goal? To introduce young and old to the wonderful world of water and reptiles through educational programs that connect man with the environment and highlight the natural wealth of Edessa and Pella in general.
A visit to the Edessa Herpetarium and Aquarium is not just a hands-on experience. It is a journey into biodiversity, knowledge and respect for life – a “palace of nature” worth discovering.
