The Bridge of Alexander the Great – Aloro Almopia

In a verdant corner of Macedonia, just outside the border village of Aloro in the municipality of Almopia, stands a rare and little known historical monument: the famous Bridge of Alexander the Great. It is one of the few surviving bridges that, according to local tradition, are attributed to the era of the Macedonian general.

Aloro is built near ancient Europos, an important settlement of antiquity, and is surrounded by traces of fortress installations. The inhabitants of the village, mainly refugees from Nikopolis of Pontus after 1922, keep alive the memory of the monument, which remains unchanged next to the river Almopaion.

The bridge, although partially damaged, presents impressive architectural elements. From its old body, two pedestals and an arched section with a span of about 15 metres can be seen, as well as an intact arch on the landward side. According to tradition, its construction served the movement and communication of the ancient settlements of Almopia with Pella and other important cities of the Macedonian kingdom.

Although there are no documented archaeological studies that prove its connection with Alexander the Great, the existence of the bridge and the geostrategic importance of the area reinforce the theory of the Hellenistic origin of the monument. The wider location, between mountains, plains and the river Almopaio, is a natural passage and a possible route of commercial and military importance.

The Alexander the Great Bridge, apart from its historical value, offers the visitor a rare experience. In the quiet landscape of Almopia, it stands as a silent reminder of the glorious past of this place.
