About Holy Monastery of Archangel Michael
Holy Monastery of Archangel Michael – In the shadow of Pikos
Built in a leafy corner of Mount Pikos, at an altitude of about 800 meters, the Holy Monastery of Archangel Michael dominates the north of the prefecture of Pella, near the village of Archangelos. The natural landscape that surrounds it is impressive: plane trees, beech trees, oaks and vast cherry orchards embrace the monastery, creating a sense of absolute peace and isolation. From the point, the view is indescribable, while the route through the heart of Almopia is an experience in itself.
The history of the monastery is lost in the depths of time. It is believed to have been founded at the end of the 12th century and was originally dedicated to St. John the Baptist. Its presence was alive for centuries, until it was abandoned in 1940. For about fifty years the monastery remained deserted until, in 1989, the Holy Metropolis of Edessa, Pella and Almopia decided to revive it, establishing a new monastic community.
Today, the monastery hosts a small male brotherhood and is an important pilgrimage destination for the region. Apart from its religious significance, the Archangel Michael Monastery is a place that offers visitors tranquility, historical memory and direct contact with the authentic nature of Pella.
