Holy Church of Saint Demetrios – Xifiani Hill

On the picturesque hill of Xifiani dominates the historic church of Agios Dimitrios, an important example of 19th century ecclesiastical architecture. Its construction was completed in 1858, according to a surviving inscription, and the church follows the type of a three-aisled basilica, with a narthex, loggia and a characteristic open portico on its south side.

One of the most impressive architectural elements is the gable roof, covered with slate slabs, which was recently renovated thanks to the active participation of the local residents. The interior is adorned with an ornate wooden carved iconostasis and a women’s balcony in the western part, in the tradition of the temples of Pella. The frescoes depict Platytera, Christ and a variety of saints, keeping alive the Byzantine artistic tradition.

At the southeastern end of the courtyard, the imposing bell tower of the church, erected in 1919, bears a moving story. Two small relief portraits, built into the structure, commemorate the memory of two workers who died during its construction.

The church of Agios Dimitrios is not only an architectural monument, but also a living cell of the local community. Thanks to the care of the residents, it is maintained in excellent condition and continues to host services and celebrations, keeping the spiritual tradition of the place alive.
