About Varosi (Edessa)

The historic quarter of Varosi is the oldest and most characteristic part of Edessa, built on the site of the ancient acropolis of the city. Its name has its roots in the Ottoman era and identifies the suburb or settlement outside the walls, while its timeless presence makes it a living witness to the cultural continuity of the area.

Varosi district – The heart of old Edessa

Varosi was the first Christian quarter of the city during the Turkish occupation and is a reference point for the traditional Macedonian architecture. The 19th century mansions, with their wooden cottages, tiled roofs and loggias, give a special atmosphere that transports the visitor to another era.

In the district, the Folklore Museum, which hosts objects of local tradition, and the Tsami House, a restored mansion that brings history to life through interactive experiences, stand out. Of particular importance are the Byzantine churches of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and Saints Peter and Paul, which date back to the 14th century and are valuable monuments of religious and architectural value.

Today, Varosi has been declared a traditional settlement and is an integral part of the cultural identity of Edessa. With its cobbled alleys, the panoramic view of the plain and the cultural events it hosts, it offers an authentic experience that unites the past with the present. A walk in Varossi is a return to the past, full of stories, images and emotions.
