About Peaches of Pella
Pella peaches are one of the most famous agricultural products in Greece and are an important factor of the local economy. Pella, with its fertile soil and favourable climate, is one of the main peach-producing areas in the country, with extensive cultivation covering thousands of acres.
Varieties and Production
In Pella, two main types of peaches are cultivated:
- Table peaches, which are consumed fresh on the domestic and international market.
- Industrial peaches, used for the production of compote, juice and other processed products.
The most common varieties include Yellow Crest, Fayette, Red Haven and Andross. Harvesting begins in June and lasts until late September, depending on the variety.
Economic Importance
Pella peaches are a key export product, with large quantities being sent mainly to Europe, Russia and the Middle East. The peach processing industry is highly developed in the region, with processing plants employing thousands of workers during the harvesting period.
Protected Designation of Origin and Quality
The peaches of Pella are known for their sweetness, intense aroma and juicy texture. Some varieties have been designated as Geographical Indication Products (PGI), highlighting the uniqueness and quality of production in the region.
Peach Festival
In Pella, events are organised in honour of peaches, such as the Peach Festival, where visitors can taste local products, learn about the production process and enjoy cultural events.
Challenges and Prospects
Although peach production in Pella is well developed, farmers face challenges such as extreme weather conditions, trade tariffs on exports and intense international competition. However, the shift to organic farming and new production technologies offers opportunities for sustainable growth and increased competitiveness.
Pella peaches are not just a local product, but a part of the cultural and agricultural heritage of the region, contributing significantly to the economy and identity of the area.
